GREATER
AVENUES COMMUNITY COUNCIL Minutes
September 6, 2000 ~ Page 4
LEGISLATURE
- Ralph Becker: I am sorry I am late. I represent two areas
and I had to attend the other community council meeting first.
We are going to talk about the Capitol Renovation today. My
phone number and address are on the back of the newsletter if
you have other questions. QUESTION: What is the price
tag and the seismic upgrading that will be done o =n the new
capitol? RESPONSE: David Hart will give you a full presentation
and he will answer all the questions.
MEMORY
GROVE - Phil Carroll: Memory Grove update. We will have
a major Tree Planting on Saturday Nov. 11th between 9-12. We
will place 70 large trees in prepared holes and have the Avenues
community help with back filling. We will have treats. We had
a clean-up in the spring, and we had 600 volunteer work hours
and we used it to apply for a grant to get the lighting on the
"A" Street Stairs. We got the grant for $5000. Large part of
it is to bury the cable down the trail. It is a little more
complicated. We need to coordinate a lot. We will need more
than $5000, and we will do planning over the winter and do it
in the spring. I have a few fun photos from the neighborhood
clean-up and it was heart-warming. My son was handed a digital
camera and took about 100 photos. We want to get them to people,
and will have them here next month.
OFFICERS
NOMINATION: We are taking nominations for the Officers
(President Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Board Members. You
can all me at 328-1081 to leave a nomination. I have a recording
there; please leave a message. Or you can write me at 89 "G"
Street with the nomination. It is legitimate to nominate yourself.
We will contact all the Board members to see which ones want
to serve again next year. QUESTIONS: What are the Time
Commitments: Board Meets once a month the 2nd Wednesday of the
month, and sets the agenda. All decisions are made in these
public meetings. Then you have other volunteer opportunities
during the year. There are lots of meetings that you can participate
in the City. COMMENT: Judith: I have enjoyed being on the Board,
and you can participate at your own level of convenience and
interest. We appreciate all the support we do get. There are
a lot of people doing a lot of things to make the Avenues a
great place to live.
Ralph
Becker - BACKGROUND on the
Capitol Restoration: The Capitol was built in 1910 at
a cost of $3 million. The State went through a ten-year debate,
and 2 bonding attempts trying to get it built. Finally, it was
found that Arvil Harriman owned $700,000 to the State, and the
Heirs made a deal that it would go to build a capitol. In the
1990's the Legislature decided it was time to look at it. It
looks really good at a surface glance, but it is falling apart.
In fact, a major piece of the ceiling fell down and would have
hit a member of the Legislature. A separate entity was established
to handle the Restoration. The Capitol Restoration Committee
was established, including the Governor, Lt Governor, several
congressional persons, with an architect and structural engineer
to consider it. In addition, an advisory board was also set
up. Richard Leonard is on that Advisory Board. Dave Hart has
worked on this for a year and a half. David Hart is the Executive
Director. We had a lot of applicants. David is an architect,
in many settings, with big buildings and worked all around the
country but is a Utah native. He has been involved in a lot
of different ways. Since he came on bard we are on a very committed
schedule.
