GREATER AVENUES COMMUNITY COUNCIL Minutes
November 1, 2000 ~ Page 2

Pages 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

We are thinking of making double parking on the Wall Street space. We will propose center medians planting on some of the streets. This procedure is used to calm traffic. We have talked about narrowing the street on East Capitol. We need comments on this. We are planning to add a 2 level parking structure and "green" other areas. This puts us up about 122 stalls.

We have a lot of mixed discussion on this next phase. We have talked with the City and we think that we need further study of closing any streets to change parking direction. We would build an additional parking in this last phase.

QUESTION: What is the overall net square feet you intend to add to the area?
RESPONSE: We will add 160,000 gross square feet.
QUESTION: Is that enough to have growth in the future?
RESPONSE: We have looked long term to 20 years, and it does up to that point.
QUESTION: How does the extra loss of parking spaces affect the neighborhood?
RESPONSE: During the 3 months of the Legislature we have decided to go to shuttle parking from the Delta Center.
QUESTION: What is the time for this project and what will it cost?
RESPONSE: The 8 different phases we have shown you will take place over a 20 (?) year period. As to the cost, we do not know yet, but Los Angeles did some of the same kinds of restoration that we need to do and it cost them $180 million dollars.
JOHN SITTNER: We will move next to the standard reports. In the interest of time, let's keep the reports as brief as possible:

POLICE: The Avenues crime stats.:
There was one sexual assault, but took place outside the Avenues, but was reported at the LDS Hospital. There were 4 aggravated assaults reported. One was a tenant who threw a brick at the landlord because the electricity was turned off for repairs. One involved an ex-boyfriend who attacked the new boyfriend with his ex girlfriend One was a house assault, in which a young man was accosted and asked for money, and when he had none, he was forced to go into his house and carry his TV to the suspect's car.

There were 4 robberies reported and 10 burglaries: Two were at businesses and the rest at residences. 5 were non-forced entries. We want to encourage you to keep your doors locked. There were 13 auto thefts reported. One owner allowed a new friend to sleep in his car, and forgot to take out his keys. The next morning the car and new friend were missing. Two vehicles were taken from a parking lot. One left a key on the seat and the door opened. One was loaned to an unknown friend, who failed to return the car. Only one was actually a locked vehicle that was broken into.

OLYMPICS: John Sittner:
We had a great response on the ideas for the Olympics. We decided we could only do 6 projects, meaning that we would assign a chair, and form a committee to carry out the project. The six are 1) The Table for Eight; 2) _______; 3) Host Athlete families program; 4) Music festival; 5) Historic homes tour; 6) Know a Utahn project. Any one who wants to do another program, we will let you bring all your ideas to the floor as well and "piggyback" them on to ours, but those are the six we will focus on. If you have any other pet project, 359-9787.

SCHOOL BOARD: Karen Derrick.
We have been working on our High Schools. We have a comprehensive report to know what we are doing in educating our children. We are doing a good job of educating those children in the Caucasian upper-socioeconomic group, but not doing so well in educating other kids. We are also looking at making all the High Schools on the same schedule. Closure of an eastside school is possible: We are delaying any decision. Our official enrollment on East Side schools is down, and it is up on the West Side. The official enrollment is several schools is as follows: Ensign 427, Lowell 527, Wasatch 487, Bryant 583, East 1932, West 2143. We have 44% minority students in the district. Call me with concerns or questions 355-8232.
