Tom
Rogan - City Council 355-0461 office, or
Teefar@aros.net
for email: 3
issues to discuss tonight:
1st: Salt Lake City
Council
serves as a board of directors to intervene and help provide
assistance
to fill up main street, to find tenants for the area not
developed. The
redevelopment commission does not own this. Tom disagreed about
this, not
just for policy reasons but thought the redevelopment commission
went beyond
its authority. In 1982 the redevelopment funds that were for the
house were
used for brokerage fees. As a result, Tom resigned as chair of the
redevelopment
commission although he is still on the board. The responsibility
as chair
was to be neutral. This was a legal issue and Tom did not feel
neutral.
2nd issue: the so-called intermediate hub at 7th West and 6th South. The question 2 years ago was, `where would it be or is it a figment of our imagination?' Amtrak has 2 trains a day. Utah transit will not comment on how to use it or pay for it. The city administration is in discussion with greyhound about it. We don't know whether it will happen or not. The council is back in Washington begging for funds. We are not just city but federal taxpayers. We will not raid the federal treasury for something that may not happen. We need to get money from Amtrak and Greyhound. There is a laundry list of questions. We can't continue to dig into a deeper hole, we either have it or we don't.
3rd Issue: The initiative to engage neighborhood schools is on committee. The hope is to use existing capacity in under-enrolled schools. Can we attract more families with children to those areas? We had a great meeting last month. Karen Derrick and colleagues are listening and considering what we have in mind.
Committee Report - Mary ???: Mary is on the planning commission. She reports Smith's renovation has a petition for a planning staff to put together a walking zone. It will be applied to the Zone Smith's is in but we don't know the result.
There is a neighborhood identification project. The avenues have been identified but we are looking for identities in Liberty Park, Glendale, East Center and others. It's a grass roots effort. These identities could include banners, art sculpture, murals, street signs and promote pride in neighborhoods. A meeting to discuss this is in the "Other Place" Restaurant tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m.
Roland Hall St. Mark's is building a new building on Guardsman Way and selling the school on 2nd Ave. What should be done with the 2nd Ave Building? Lowell Elementary also has the potential to be closed. The community council can get involved with what is done with the RHSM school.
