Karen Derrick -School Board  355-8232:  Nothing new has happened since we last met. The decision to close which school is a slow process. The question of accreditation of Highland and West High Schools has to do with not having enough principals. East already hired a 3rd assistant principal. The other two schools have too many students and need to hire a 3rd assistant principal. Another issue is that 45% of time and teachers is on core classes and 55% is on elective classes. We are having a 3 day high school summit to discuss this. Next Tues. night is a study session. The school board is voting all High Schools to be on the same schedule.

Q/C:  Is the vote to put classes on West High School's schedule?

Ans:  They are leaning toward the block. All the high schools in the valley are on the block except Brighton.

Q/C:  7:30 a.m. is too early for school to begin.

Ans:  Karen agreed. Unification will be great too.

Q/C:  Are after school programs to be private again?

Ans:  That is a site based decision

Q/C:  How do you determine ratio of Student/teacher?

Ans:  Site based decision, the principal in charge is held accountable

Financial Report - John Sittner:  John illustrated the income statement for 2000 and the last part of 1999. We show $5000 more street fair income than the prior year but only $1000 more in expenses. We netted $4000 more in the street fair. He has moved the accounts into high yield money market accounts and has made $2500 interest this year. The real number is more like $2000 vs. $1000 because of the prior year's significant expense on neighborhood traffic and the study on Main Street. The summary of is expenses up $3000 and income is up $5000. The balance sheet shows how much we have vs. how much we owe. We have 3 vehicles with fidelity, an interest account, money market account, and a CD, $41,000 in bank and $14,000 we are keeping for people's streetlights. (The neighborhood council handles it for them.) $30,000 net assets up last year from all sources total $13,000 income.

Q/C:  Is this a 501 CB that it's accountable to? What governs this?

Ans:  We have a series of bylaws. Three people can sign on the accounts. The new officers need to have their names put there and the old officers taken off. We are so small we don't have tax filing requirements.

Request by John Sittner--he has no time to do the ads for the newsletter now. Could someone volunteer to do that for 5-6 hours a month during the first week of the month?
