REPORTS
Police: (Kim Guess) She brought a sign to
address the many complaints about behavior to the Bonneville Shoreline
path (Going through private properties) People on 18th Avenue have had
a lot of trouble with parties in the “pit” area, rolling in kegs of beer,
etc. Many of the signs were defaced or stolen. So we will be putting up
new signs. We are now calling the area the Foothill Protection Area (instead
of the watershed). People must be respectful of the environment as well
as the public property they cross. We are in the fire zone, and so we
need to be mindful of that. These signs will be put up this month. They
will read, Rules: No Alcohol Beverages, No Trespassing on Private Property,
No Camping, No Fires, No Discharging Firearms, No Dogs off leash, No Dumping,
No Off-road Vehicles.
17 cars were stolen in the Avenues. Some were left running. Some were older. Half of them had no broken windows where there was a forced entry. 95% are found in Salt Lake City, but they are usually stripped and damaged. One robbery took place at Smiths, a strong-armed robbery by a female in the afternoon. The woman spoke to the woman, then grabbed the lady’s purse and ran off. The lady ran after her and grabbed back her purse, but the suspect fled.
There were an alarming number of burglaries. One gentleman set up a camera in his kitchen to photograph people because he was convinced someone (a neighbor) was stealing his alcohol. The neighbor was caught on film coming in the doggy-door, taking his liquor, putting in a bottle, and replacing it with water. Two other burglaries occurred by climbing up a balcony and going through sliding door. A woman reported that her back door was kicked in and a burglary occurred in her home. He knocked first and she did not respond, so he went around the back and kicked in his back door. Another burglary occurred when a repairman had a key, and came in during the weekend. Car strips were 22. Aggravated assault occurred between two roommates. Clubs tied to the steering wheel work if they are applied correctly. You can contact us by calling me at 799-3476 and Detective Coates 799-3444. If you see a suspicious person call 799-3000. Consider Neighborhood Watch. We rely on you to be our eyes and ears.
LEGISLATURE: Ralph Becker- We are in slow
season but I thought I would mention the Capitol Restoration Plan. The
Legislature approved funding to build two new wings behind the Capitol.
We have been looking at other restorations throughout the country. We
approved a Master Plan and Design Imperatives and are moving ahead with
the two wings. Dave Hart, who has talked to us a few times, has looked
at every historical document and what has happened over the years. The
Master Plan calls for beginning construction right after the Olympics,
spending two years building the wings, then moving everyone out of the
Capitol and into the wings, and then restoring the Capitol over 4 years.
It will cost $200 million dollars. The wings will be subservient and complementary
to the Capitol. They are trying to be sensitive to the traffic and historical
issues that we are concerned over. Tom Rogan has been good about focusing
on increased traffic. And the expectation is that it will not be significant.
We will probably have a special session to deal with the Tech Centers.
