Question: What is the noise level in Aves? There is no decimal amount. The rule is quiet from 10 pm until 7 am, except on weekends, and then it's later at night. Garbage pickup complaints say the trucks come between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Noise from LDS hosp. on D street and 9th is incredibly loud all the time (fans). The helicopters, pipes and machinery they have create noise. Call the public relations person at LDS hospital. They are there to work with you. Phone 799-3476 for Kim. Will enforce on too early garbage pickup. Nothing should be happening until after 7:00am. Notify the police and they will contact them, and for deliveries etc., as well. The mayor will be here Sat. May 5, at Einstein bagels on South temple and E Street from 10:00 am --12 noon. All are encouraged to come--invite a friend.

Spotlighting Avenues businesses discussion by Steve Moss: Steve read a summary about Java Jo's coffee shop. They have been a 4 year advertiser. Would it be appropriate to deal with businesses that have supported us that way? How much space do we have in our monthly bulletin? New businesses are opening up all the time. Could we isolate ones in Aves.? City says that would be horrendous. What he just read would fit on 1 quarter of a page. One possibility would be to do a map once a year to acknowledge all services that have a storefront and hit them all at once. And continue to make a simple listing of new ones. Also update newsletter website. Steve will get it currently updated. How could we keep track of the ones to delete that go out of business? Why emphasize new ones over ones who have been loyal supporters of GACC? Mailing piece is to let people know a community council exists and what its purposes are. Advertising is only there to fund that. Start with businesses on the back. A special edition could do this once a year and be included on website. The board will review it.

Legislature: Ralph Becker excused. Paula: we're on a semi vacation period using this time to select what we want to prioritize to study. Redistricting committees have begun. Need to watch out that SLC isn't divided into various pieces. Intent is to eliminate a SLC senator. They are supposed to spread out and take more space. Paula's area has gone from 57,000 to almost 61,000 since 1990. Question: What is session for upcoming legislature because of Olympics? This summer interim committee sessions will probably carry more weight. Anything the committee has passed by majority or heavy support will go to the floor the day the session opens. That is the way we will move the session along faster. Will stop and recess rather than adjourn. We don't know quite how it will be set. Didn't change the constitution so we are still under what rules we have.

City Council: Tom Rogan: 3 items to talk about tonight, mostly good news. Last evening we approved a budget amendment for current fiscal year 2000-2001. Part of that would affect most directly our community council. We accepted a grant obtained from dept of justice for 2 full time prosecutors who will deal with our quality of life issues. (i.e. noise, nuisance) They will rotate in the community and we'll be able to call them and stop in and talk to them. Sim Gill will address our issues.

A city council and school board discussions' event will occur in May. Each of us will receive a mailer giving us more info. Purpose of this event is to decide how we want to respond to our under-enrollment. What's being done elsewhere will be presented. Cosponsors are SLC board of Ed and the city council. The dates are May 23 and 24 at the Sorenson Multicultural Center, 855 W. Calif. Ave. Consultants coming into town will help us with diverse constituents. 1st evening will be info. The 2nd evening is to discuss what we are going to do here in our community. Please come, particularly if you have children-- --or if you just care.

3rd issue: this is budget season. In the city, the mayor's budget presentation last night included 13 items--Tom thinks 5 good, 8 bad. The fundamental principle is "let's take care of what we have." Most requests are good ideas. It's a difficult choice as to what to choose. The city council is conservative. Keep tuned to the budget process. Director of Olympic planning has let us know these Olympic activities are very expensive and we will end up paying for those. Won't be finished until sometime in June.
