School board: Karen Derrick: We also enjoy working with the city council regarding the under-enrollment issue. It is a symptom of what is happening all over the city. We are not attracting young families. The closure committee has started to meet. 3rd meeting is this evening occurring at this moment. They are taking a tour of school buildings--pretty much outside (rather than inside) of them. These buildings are located east of I-15. We did end up having professional facilitators help us. We had asked for volunteers but no one wanted the job so the board hired someone. The sad occurrence last fall of 2 highland students killed in rollover accident coming home from Las Angeles prompts beefing up the travel policy. Don't want something like this to happen again. We have had a high school summit to do a better job of delivering education. Will study intermediate schools in the fall. There is a lot we can do to deliver a better education at all levels. Karen Derrick at 355 8232 for discussion or questions--will talk to anyone about these issues. Need to look at lots of criteria not just one school that has a great program. Could one school be built to replace two? Maybe. Question: What skills does the committee have to look at what's required to build a new school --costs etc. Answer: same as the school board. Committee has a meeting May 23, 1st night of session at Sorenson Multipurpose Center. Karen will notify them of the conflict. When a school is closed the district retains it.
Street fair: Ken Bronson is the chairman this year and needs your assistance. This event adds money to the coffers and we celebrate what a unique place we live in. It takes a certain amount of work to put it on. It's not too much of a burden if we can get lots to participate. Passed around a sign up sheet for volunteers. 1st meeting is Sat. May 12, at 668 F street, (Ken's home) at 8 a.m. Phone 366-0172, (work). Refreshments served.
Olympic Athlete Hosting Program: Megan Sather works for SLOC. Enhance athlete experience. Complementary hosting. Will you open your homes involve local community. Create international or national exchange program. Wonderful experiences. Can't get much closer to games than sharing with family member supporting their athlete. We need several host families for the Olympic Winter Games, (Feb 6-14) and 200-300 host families for Paralympic Winter Games (Mar 5-16, `02). Have a separate bedroom for 2 guests, 8-day stay, pick up guests at reception center not airport. Host to provide daily breakfast and assistance to nearest point of public trans. They are to make their own way on our public transportation system. Host applications are on web or here in library. Encourage you to have an experience and to look at this program.
Committee reports: Jim Jenkin reported on a meeting sponsored by the city and engineering firms doing South Temple Street's reconstruction shared the following info. Construction is going out to bid this fall to begin in the spring of 2002 and finish in 2003. The process is to 1st dig up utilities and replace them in phase 1, then dig up the road and replace it in phase 2. They will maintain 2-way traffic in 1st phase. One lane will stay open, East bound only, all the way to Virginia Street during 2nd phase. The contractor is required to install a web site. The contractor will be required to keep 5th East, 7th East, and 9th East intersections open to South Temple traffic. 93% of project is funded by Nat'l government. A historic preservation group will help preserve the lattice light poles. New tops will be put on them and they will be very attractive when finished. Sandstone walks and curbs will be preserved, as they will pay attention to maintaining historic value. Actual layout of the street won't change. Comment: As a consequence, we see the Avenues carrying the bulk of traffic to the University due to that street and Guardsman Way being under construction. Please do something to discourage speed in 2nd and (bumps) 3rd aves -Answer only enforcement is promised. Tom will deal with that issue because it was supposed to be incorporated in the construction plan before it was allowed to go forward. Utilities are over 80 years old and their lifespan is 60-80 years. The old roadbed is not up to current traffic. Question: Could lights on 1st south be timed to help deal with traffic? UDOT controls that, city hasn't much input. All traffic from I-15 to the U will be headed up to U. on the new corridor because of new 4th South I-15 exit. Question: What about schools' foot traffic? (Lowell, Bryant, Wasatch). There were no answers for that. More info will be coming. At some point they will have a rep here at GACC. Changes need to be before that.
