Street lighting issue: Wayne Green. John Sittner maintained liaison with Com Council but Wayne has agreed to relieve him of some of that obligation. Will outline how the street lighting works. 1st of all--the basic driving force behind them is the matching grants program of the city. Currently it is not funded. The 1st of July, funds will be available for people to apply to city for variety of things, but for tonight's discussion, for street lighting. After July 1, you have six weeks (mid-August is deadline) to ask for lighting. City contact that handles this is Sherry Collins, 535-6150. She will maintain a list of names and addresses and as soon as she knows what the funding is, will notify you to get your applications in. This is a program you put together block-by-block. Get everybody on your block to select light style and location of placement. Get grant request and turn it in to city who pays half. People who have lights on their property will have the light connected to their circuit. Minimal charge about $1.00 a month but could be $2.00 a month now. Construction crew will have to dig from light to your house to make connection. Works great if no obstruction. These are little things you have to check up front. Workers want 50% up front. At completion the neighbors have to sign off saying it's done to their satisfaction. Then city will pay the balance. You control final payment. 2 types of lights approved by landmarks--Sole by Felt Lighting & Halophane. They cost approx $1200 a light. Divide up the cost, but not everyone has to participate. Neighbors deal with contractors. Grant application is the contract. Permission of property owner is included in the package. Homeowner is responsible for maintenance except in case of accident etc. This same 50% thing is available for sidewalks. Doesn't have to be matched in cash--can be labor, time, material etc.

Smith's remodel plan from about 2 years ago they announced they were going to remodel their store. A neighborhood committee was gotten together to work with them. They came up with a very nice plan with nice features. New owner didn't like cost so it hasn't gone forward (Kroger). Main office at Smith's indicates that they intend to stay with plan we have. The problem is still in financing. Kroger has strict rule as to prorating of expense vs. intake. New pres. of Smith's is going to try to make a case to stick with our original plan. Looks like it's going to be on hold. Could we get a copy of the drawings to library? Lisa is still the contact person at Smith's. The architect is still the same.

OPEN FORUM:
Dick Colvin asked question to Tom Rogan about the possibility of taxing the venues for the Olympics. Answer: No. Dick then said `all money will go to IOC and none to us. And then they expect us to host the athlete's families for nothing.' Not many in the room seemed enthusiastic about the Olympics coming to SLC.

Chris Graham endorsement--get exact quote at board meeting All areas benefit from 3 schools.

To close any of them would hurt the neighborhood. We ask you to consider alternatives. Offer high quality education that would attract families. Comment suggested that she send this to Tribune and Des news. Could the GACC endorse this policy --Yes. We can put it on the agenda to make it happen appropriately.

Judith Locke thanked us for doing the newsletter while she was away last month.

Dave Zaff brought up an environmental problem of people watering their lawns inappropriately/excessively. We are in a drought. We should have someone come from public utilities to address that issue. We are to change our habits. Water hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 2nd issue--could we time the lights and post a sign like they do in Tuscon?-- "These lights are timed at 30 miles an hour".

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm
