SLC COUNCIL - Tom Rogan: (teefar@aros.net) 355-0461. I have 3 issues to report: Schools: We held a school closure symposium which was generally well received. We would like to see some collaboration between the schools and the City Government. We wanted to explore alternatives to closures. We asked them to give us a dollar figure to know what their needs were to postpone closure. They didn't give us an amount, so we never were able to respond to it. We are really concerned about this issue. There is some positive progress. They are only going to close two schools now, and not three. Budget: We have approved a budget. We differ a bit from the Mayor. The City Council has as its priorities 1- Public Safety (fire and police), and 2- Taking care of what we have. We have some disagreement on what else should be funded (once the two priorities are met). We have more good ideas than we have financial means to do.

Olympics: We received a briefing on the large-scale events fest: At our suggestion City Creek Park and Memory Grove Park were taken out of large-scale event places. We did not feel that it was fair to the neighbors.

SCHOOL BOARD: no rep. Karen Derrick was at Graduation at West High School.

SOUTH TEMPLE BUILDING VARIANCE: Will Connelly: I represent a partnership who is attempting to take the old PTA Building at 1027 E. South Temple and take the home there and return it to residential use, and put an attractive four-plex on the parking lot. It will give the appearance of simply a second home. (He showed site.) They will put a parking lot underground. It closes a gap on the streetscape. The older house is no longer usable as a commercial property. All residential trappings have also been gutted - no bathrooms or kitchen remain. We will remodel it to return it to a fine residential home. The City Zoning has set back limits of 20 feet from the front, 25 feet from the rear, and 10 feet on each side. The other homes on South Temple have large front yards, so we want a variance to move ours back to have 20 feet in the back, so that it matches the other yards on the streets. We would like a letter stating that we have presented this to the GACC. Approved.

MICRO-ENTERPRISE LOAN FUND: Marilyn - We have a non-profit company and we are a resource for the Avenues and Salt Lake County. If you had need of some extra money to operate a business, we can help. Our program is designed to be a lender of last resort. If you cannot get a loan from a bank and need some help getting funded, we can help. The person needing money to open a business first comes to an orientation. We help them write a business plan, so they learn how a business should be run. They do a presentation to a committee. We read the business plan, and learn the person's desires and abilities. Then we work with them, providing mentors, advisory, legal, marketing, to help them succeed. QUESTION: Where do you get your money? Three banks invested in us. We have less than a 7% loss on the loans.

UTAH FOSTER CARE FOUNDATION: We are a private non-profit that contracts with the State to find families to keep children in their own communities, and go to their own schools. Right now in this Metro area we have 152 children in foster care, and we only have 24 families in the area. We need people to help care for abused and neglected children.
